Matching Your Career Path to Your Birth Order

Matching Your Career Path to Your Birth Order

Its graduation time for most high school
seniors. For some it means on to college
and picking a major, but for others it starts
the hunt to find a job against the backdrop
of high unemployment and a lagging
economy. Many people take a zig zag path
when locating that perfect job that feels just
right. It would be better to know in advance
just who you are and the clear understanding
of the kind of position that is a perfect match.
Understanding birth order can be a big help.

                 Birth Order Theory
The concept behind birth order is that each child in a
family is different and wants to be. Every birth order
has its own pluses and minuses when it comes to
characteristics and personality. To find your “true”
birth order you must take into consideration:
1.     Your gender in the family.
2.     Were there any spaces of 4 or more years
between siblings or groups of siblings?
3.     Who you lived with until age 16.
4.     Was there a death of a sibling?
5.     Were there any step of half siblings you lived with?
6.     Were there any multiple births in your family?
7.     Any adopted siblings in the family?
8.  Were any of your siblings handicapped?
Taking all the above variables into consideration
you can find your “true” birth order. The details
are in the book, Life’s Fingerprint: How Birth
Order Affects Your Path Throughout Life, by
Dr. Robert V.V. Hurst. Let’s now explore the
birth orders and try to match them with their
                    perfection position.

                      Only Child
Being the only child in your family you grew up in
the world of adults. At school you were the “adult”
in the room and many of your fellow students
looked up to you.  You go on to college with a lot
of self-confidence given to you by your parents.
The world is yours for the taking if you want it.
In anything you do you will rise to the top
managerial position but you can also start a project
entirely on your own. You don’t feel you can fail.
Working alone is no problem and you are not one
to shout orders to those below you. You have a
quiet sense of who you are and learning new
things is not difficult. Books were your first
friends so this is a field that would hold a lot of
interest. You share the company of other Only
birth orders; Walter Cronkite, Lauren Bacall,
Howard Hughes, Jesse Jackson, Jack Lemon,
Charles Lindbergh, Condoleezza Rice, and Betty
                  White.

                         First Born
The Only child becomes a firstborn with the birth
of the second child in the family. Now he is not
alone but has to work to keep the "throne". If he
hasn't been “dethroned” by a younger sibling
firstborns become high achievers, especially in
school where they had a head start. They try to be
perfect, follow all the rules and even enforce them
with the younger siblings. Valedictorian or Eagle
Scout is all in a day’s work for number One.
There are two types of firstborns, one that loves
giving orders and the other a very nurturing
person who can’t do enough for you. Both are
“in charge” people, they just go about it
differently. They are future CEO’s either in the
home or out in the business world, any place
that they can exercise their power. Politicians,
teachers, publishers, and business owners are
all a good match for a firstborn. Hugh Hefner,
Jimmy Stewart, Sam Walton, Henry Ford, Rush
Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, J.K. Rowling and
                    Hillary Clinton are all firstborns.

                      Second Born
This child doesn’t want to be compared to his older
sibling and will search out a new direction.  Where
the older child is the student, the next in line will be
the athlete, anything to make them different. If the
firstborn takes over the family business the second
child must find something new. The second born
does not want to be told what to do so it is best he
find employment where there is little supervision.
Running his own business is ideal as he will be a
hands off owner, a very different boss than a
firstborn. For these people money is important,
if you have enough no one tells you what to do.
Second borns can have great outgoing
personalities, creating something new and different
is what they love. They always seem to be working
on a project. Warren Buffett, Johnny Carson, Bill
Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Fred Astaire, Martha
Stewart, John Belushi, Paul Newman and Martin
Luther King Jr. are all second borns.

                        Third Born
The third born is the birth order that sees the world
very differently than the first two births.  They
are not into power over others like the first born or
money to control their own space which is true of
the second born. They see the big picture of life,
the world around them and its people. They are
the sensitive ones that want to save the world.
The creative arts, religion, outdoor work, the
trades using their hands and teaching others are
all are areas that appeal to the third born. Working
with groups of people or creating something
beautiful is what these people love. Tom Hanks,
Madonna, Mother Teresa, Sarah Palin and Marlon
Brando Jr. are all third borns.

                         Fourth Born
The fourth born is the true baby in the family and
has been taken care of by his older siblings. They
may get a head start in school if the older siblings
tried to teach them how to read. This birth order
loves to be around people and older people are
not intimidating as that is who they grew up with.
Having fun is the underlying theme with the fourth
born. They are natural salesmen and any sport
interests them. Coaching young athletes is a
perfect match. They know the real world is hard
but can stand up to the challenge. They would
really like work to be play. Dolly Parton, Michael
Jordan, and Kirk Douglas are all fourth borns.

                          Double Birth Orders
All the above birth orders can become double birth
orders when separated from their siblings by a
space of four years or more. This gives them the
characteristics of the Only child added to their
birth order number. If this happens, you add a lot
of power to your number. These people are more
complex because they demonstrate two different
personality characteristics but not at the same
time. Although they are much stronger than the
single birth orders this added power can cause
problems with co-workers who never know
which personality has come to work.

                           Conclusion
Find your “real” birth order and then check on
the characteristics that describe you and who
you really are. In every profession all birth
orders have a place. Knowing who you are
will allow you to pick an area of work that fits
your birth order. In every profession all birth
orders have a place. If law interests you, find
your birth order match in one of the many
diverse areas of law. There are trial attorneys,
family attorneys, those that deal with real estate,
                      patents, criminal attorneys, and immigration
attorneys, just to name a few. A perfect fit for
each of the birth orders. If education is your
interest you can pick any number of subjects to
teach, English, science, art, coaching and
working in administration all fit different birth
orders.Know your birth order and take a straight
course to your future not a zig zag one. Now
unpack your suitcase and enjoy your time in
                      college!

Who will Mitt Romney pick as his Running Mate? Birth Order may answer this question.

                                                                Mitt Romney

It is starting to look like Mitt Romney will win the
Republican nomination for President and now he needs
to pick a running mate. This is his first chance to hire
someone for his administration.  In the past, running
mates were chosen if they could deliver a State or was
someone to add balance to the nominee’s experience.
Some believe that ideological balance is the answer to a
strong ticket. I believe that picking a running mate is similar
to picking a marriage partner.  If this is true, one of the two
types of “love at first sight” will give us the answer.
Presidential candidates will pick someone with their own
birth order or the birth order and gender that matches a
sibling in their own family. The nominee would show the
birth order characteristics that Mitt would be most familiar.

How Birth Order Influences this Decision
Hiring someone is a very personal decision.  If we like
ourselves then we would be attracted to someone that
seems to be like ourselves.  This is especially true when
you look at someone’s birth order.  The traits of similar
birth orders can be expressed in others the same way,
and that is the attraction. If you pick someone who matches
the birth order of one of your siblings you do so because
you understand your sibling’s particular birth order.

VP Selections of Past Presidents
Ronald Reagan was a second born with an older brother.
He  chose as his running mate George H.W. Bush who
was also a second born with an older brother.
George H.W. Bush the second born, chose Dan Quayle
a firstborn like George’s older brother.
Bill Clinton a One/Only double birth order picked Al Gore
a Two/Only birth order, the same as Bill’s younger brother
Roger.  Both Bill and Al have double birth orders because
the interval between themselves and their sibling was
four or more years.
George W. Bush a firstborn became a One/Only, after the
death of his younger sister, this made the interval between
George and Jeb seven years. George picked Dick Cheney
a firstborn as his Vice Presidential running mate much like
himself.
President Barack Obama a One/Only double birth
order picked Joe Biden a Firstborn, a birth order very
similar to his own.

The Birth Order of Mitt Romney
Mitt Romney has a Double Birth order.  His is a Four/Only
birth order. Lynn was the Firstborn, Jane the Second born
and Scott the Third born. Mitt is seven years younger than
Scott and is separated from the first group of three siblings
by seven years. He is the fourth born and picks up the Only
birth order as he was home alone with his mother like an
Only child before he went off to school to join his siblings.
This makes him act like an Only child 70 % of the time and a
Fourth born 30% of the time.  With this combination it is
easy to understand why he fails to show too much emotion
as the “adult like” Only child.  At times he gives in to others
as the Fourth born birth order that is the baby in the family.
With these two birth orders it is no wonder that his changing
views confuse many who don’t understand what happens
when you have a double birth order.

Mitt Romney’s VP Choices
If Mitt tries to match his sibling’s birth orders in a Vice
Presidential pick he would be looking for a firstborn or
second born woman. There are many to chose from but
with the memory of Sarah Palin fresh in everyone’s mind
a woman would be a long shot.  This leaves an opening for
a third born male and that would be Ron Paul.  I don’t think
Ron Paul is on Mitts short list though, the two of them have
not been very antagonistic toward each other during the
campaign.  The name Marco Rubio keeps coming up and he
is a Three/ One double birth order. Not out of the question
but still not a perfect match.  A perfect match would be another
Four/Only double birth order and that is Paul Ryan the
Congressman from Wisconsin.  Both of these men see the
financial situation as the main issue for the country.  I would
not be surprised if Paul Ryan was picked as his running mate.

The Final Decision
Many factors can be thought to influence the decision to select a
running mate for a Presidential Candidate.  Geography, political
ideology, and even a reward for helping the party or candidate.
If the decision is the candidate’s alone, he will likely pick someone
with one of the two types of “love at first sight” birth orders.
Mitt carries a Four/Only double birth order, Paul Ryan may appear to
be the ideal match but don’t rule out the outside influences on Mitt.
The four side of his double birth order will yield to outside pressures,
we may see a match not made in heaven.

Unmasking Your Ancestors Using Birth Order

For those of you interested in Genealogy I think you
will find the study of birth order to be of great benefit.
Knowing the birth order of your ancestors will allow
You to unmask their personalities.

Birth Order Characteristics
Each birth order carries with it a number of personality
characteristics that color the individual that has that
birth order.  It is further influenced by their other siblings
genders  and  interaction.  When there are four or more
years of spacing between individual siblings or groups of
siblings the phenomenon of Double Birth Order occurs.

Only Birth Order
This birth order is at the top of the birth order pyramid
when we think of self confidence.  They are the adult, as
that is their peer group.  Each Only child is unique as they
are a blend of each parent’s birth order.  Like all the other
birth orders they show two expressions of their characteristics,
responsible or self indulged.  If one of your ancestors was
an Only child you may see them with many children or none
at all.  Those with no children have no ancestors but you may
still find them on your family tree.

First Born
These are your leaders and CEO’s.  They love to give direction
and be in-charge.  Very responsible and are usually very hard
on themselves to be perfect. If the first born is a female and the
second a male she may be dethroned and her younger brother
takes the first born position.  This was especially true when
researching descendants back 50 or 100 years, before the role
of women had changed.

Second Born
This ancestor may have been the athlete in the family.  That
is what can make the second born different from his studious
first born brother or sister. He may have been the family rebel
and went in a different direction from the rest of the family.
Not one to be told what to do but someone who had a strong
idea of right and wrong.

Third Born
This was your creative ancestor. They may have been an
artesian of some sort or a teacher or nurse. The Third born
can have an interest in some humanitarian issue.  They
may have a gentle or guarded personality and are sensitive
to others. They understand the family better than any of
the other siblings.

 Fourth Born
This is the baby of the family.  He may have gone farther
in school than his older siblings because he was educated
by his older brothers and sisters. They like to have fun and
is the one that keeps the playful kid attitude all his life.
This is your 80 year old relative that wants to skydive!

 Spacing Individual  Siblings-Double Birth Orders
When a sibling is spaced four or more years apart from
their next older or younger brother or sister they receive
an additional birth order, that of an Only child. The reason
for this is that this child spends at least four or more years
at home with his mother and gets the same nurturing as an
Only child and develops more self confidence.  This power
added to his birth order number amplifies, magnifies and
intensifies all the normal birth order characteristics.

Spacing Groups of Siblings- Double Birth Orders
When groups of siblings are spaced four or more years apart
you get a family within a family. These siblings don’t get the
Only birth order with their own number but instead another
single number.  If there were four children and the first two
were spaced two years apart they would be a One and a Two.
If the next two children were born five years later and were
also spaced two years apart they become a Three/One and a
Four/Two.  They are the third and fourth children in the family
but the first and second in this second family.  They show
blending of the characteristics of their two birth orders.

 General George Armstrong Custer-Firstborn
If General Custer was one of your relatives you might wonder
what was he really like?  He was a overachieving firstborn of
five children. His parents treated him special. This happens
with many firstborns especially if they are the first boy. These
kids like to give orders and who better to do that than a General.
He became a General at age 23 while fighting in the Battle of
Gettysburg. Always wanting to stand out and be first, he captured
the first Confederate Flag of the Civil War. He was flamboyant
in appearance and behavior and all this may have gone to
his head. As a firstborn failure is not an option.  They find it
very difficult to admit they are wrong. When all the signs said
to leave the Cheyenne and Sioux Indian territory Custer could
not admit he had made a mistake and it cost him his life and
those of his 261 men in the Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876.

 Abraham Lincoln-Second Born
Much has been written about our 16th President but what
about his birth order?  Lincoln was the second child of Thomas
and Nancy Lincoln. His sister Sara was two years older but we
can assume that it was an easy move to dethrone his older
sister and move up in birth order.  At an early age he was working
the farm with his father. Two Second born characteristics that
stand out was his constant drive to better his position and move
up in the  world and his steadfast belief in right and wrong.
He also showed the athleticism of the Second born in his reported
wrestling match when challenged by the leader of a group of
ruffians. The “don’t tell me what  to do” attitude of the Second
born showed up again when he broke off his first engagement to
Mary Todd.  Unshakable in his belief that slavery was wrong he
did not give in to his critics but held his ground. He saw the bigger
picture of injustice and not a move to protect himself.  He said, “I
will suffer death before I consent….to any concession or
compromise……” He did pay the ultimate price.

 George Washington-One/Three Double Birth Order
How lucky our country was to have this man be our first leader.
He fulfilled two roles; one as the leader of our American
Revolutionary War and second as our first President of the
United States of America. This man had a unique double birth
order and was able to use the qualities of both to achieve his goals.
George was the firstborn to his father’s second wife.  In his first
marriage two sons survived to adulthood, Lawrence and Augustine
both over 10 years older than George.  When this happens it makes
George the Third born but in his father’s second family giving him
the 1/3 birth order.  He showed characteristics of both birth orders.
The One gave him the need to lead and as the commander-in-chief
of the Continental Army and our first President he fulfilled his need
to lead.  The Three birth order gave him the ability to work with
groups of people and really understand them.   His troops, the
Congress and the American people. The Three birth order has a
vision and George was no exception. He saw a great and powerful
nation using the government to preserve liberty and promote a spirit
of America nationalism.

 Make Your Ancestors Come Alive
Using the Theory of birth order first find the “true” birth order of
your ancestor. Then see if events in their lives or the stories
you have heard show the characteristics of their birth orders.
You will now see them in a completely different light.

The Positive and Negative Expressions of Birth Order Traits: How People with the Same Birth Order can Appear so Different?

When explaining the characteristic traits of the various
birth orders to my audience I am asked by some why
they or someone they know does not seem to fit the
mold as I explain the traits of their birth order. This is
the time when I explain that birth order traits can be
expressed in both a calm or a combative manner. In
other words, a positive or negative expression of the traits.

The Only Birth Order
Most everyone has seen the movie Willie Wonka and
the Chocolate Factory. The children in this movie
express the two sides of the Only birth order.  Charlie,
the responsible little “adult like” child was considerate
and helped care for his elderly relatives. The other
children, Gustaf, Tex, and Veronica were selfish and
displayed the characteristics of a spoiled child. This
birth order can be the adult in the room or a demanding
self-centered personality. Regis Philbin is an example
that shows the “adult-like” characteristics. Calm and
self-assured at all times. This was also true of Walter
Cronkite the broadcaster who was labeled “The most
trusted man in America”. The character of the Only
child is the one birth order that reflects the parents and
their parenting. Condoleezza Rice is another well
mannered “adult like” Only birth order.  Her father
was a minister and her mother a music teacher.  Books
and education were her calling and she became President
of Stanford University at the age of 38. David Berkowitz
the “Son of Sam” killer was an illegitimate child that was
adopted.  Raised as an Only child he was a lonely and shy
and even joined the Baptist Church to find friends.  He
acted out his frustrations as he was not getting  direction
from his parents. Charles Manson was another Only that
had a very troubled childhood. His mother went to prison
for armed robbery and prostitution. He was raised by an
antiestablishment uncle who was a “mountain man”.  By
age nine Charlie set his school on fire. His followers were
the family he never had but they carried out his anti-
establishment agenda.

Sibling Conflicts: First and Second Borns
The interaction between siblings is the reason for unique
expressions of birth order traits. For the firstborn holding
on to their “Throne” is the all important focus of their
unconscious behavior.  They may have to fight hard to hold
their position, as did Hillary Clinton who had two younger
brothers.  This carried over into her adult life where we see
her display the firstborn traits aggressively. Power over
others is what the firstborn wants and Hillary is not subtle
in her approach.  Kelly Ripa shows the opposite characteristics
as a first born, she did not have to fight off a challenge to her
throne by a younger sister. Jimmy Stewart was also a firstborn
with a very self-assured personality.  He did not feel the
pressure on the “Throne” from his younger sisters.  This made
him a very supportive calm person because he had no fear of
losing his position in the family.  Most of the roles he took
expressed this trait of a composed and calm person, feeling
very secure.

I recall one person that I was consulting, a firstborn with a
younger sister that was born with a handicapped. She seemed
to be holding back her rage.  As the firstborn she was not
receiving the attention she felt she deserved.  Her younger
sister was getting the attention that she felt was her right.
She could not speak out against her sister, she just suffered
in silence until she could take out her feelings and frustration
on someone not in her family. Her first husband felt the full
force of her discontent and that marriage ended in divorce.

Second Born
The second born has an overwhelming desire to dethrone the
firstborn and take this position.  If he can accomplish this no
one will be telling him what to do. This of course has a
devastating effect on the firstborn.  As children, the second
born will start copying their older sibling and if they cannot
achieve the dethroning, they will go in another direction.
They may then show frustration and aggressiveness all of
their lives.  This could have been the case of Kim Jon-IL
the former dictator of North Korea, or Anthony Weiner
the former Congressman. If they do elevate themselves
to the higher position they may still feel the need to earn
a lot of money to hold their position and prevent others
from giving them orders. Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and
Mark Zuckerberg are billionaires, all had older sisters.
Their money allows them the freedom they seek. Martha
Stewart may have gone a little too far by using the system
for insider trading to make additional money. The former
Congressman Tom Delay may also have lost his moral
compass when he was convicted of money laundering.
In the Congress he was nicknamed the “Hammer” for
wreaking political vengeance on his opponents. This is
the birth order than likes to control their space but not
that of others. The Second born has a belief system that
is hard to change for he does not see things personally
but has his own standards of what is right and wrong.
He goes right when the others go left and that is exactly
what was said of our former President Ronald Reagan a
Second born that dethroned his older brother. Ronald Reagan
held to his belief about the evils of Communism. When at
the Berlin Wall that separated East and West Berlin he said,
“Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall” and it did come
down. If the Second born holds stubbornly to his beliefs
he can show a negative side of this birth order. Timothy
McVea the Oklahoma Bomber held stubbornly to his belief
about the abuse of power by the Federal Government.
Eva Braun, Hitler’s mistress could not bring herself to
believe that Hitler was wrong even though her own father
thought he was a mad man. On the positive side Martin
Luther King Jr. held to his belief that all men should be
treated equal in his quest for civil liberty. The stubborn
trait of this birth order can be used for good.

Third Born
The Third birth order sees life differently from their first two
siblings. Many Third borns are not well grounded in reality
and can become dreamers. They see the artistic side of things
and see the bigger picture of humanity in all its forms. They are
very sensitive and can come and go emotionally. Mother
Theresa was a Third born. She saw poverty in India and tried
to help people overcome their circumstances.  Religion is an
interest of many Third borns as they have a non monetary
view of the world. When I say Rosie O’Donnell was a Third
born people say how can that be? Your personality is shaped
by your position in the family and from your interactions with
yoursiblings. Rosie has all brothers with whom she interacted.
The Third born is very sensitive and will do their best to not
show they have been hurt from others by sometimes putting
up a hard shell as protection. This is Rosie’s defense. Chris
Farley used comedy to shield himself from the world but also
fell prey to drugs as did Charlie Sheen, another Third born.
On the positive side, Dwight Eisenhower our former President
was the  commander our troops and won World War II
and helped bring peace to the World. President Teddy
Roosevelt was instrumental in developing our National Park
system by saving much of our wilderness for others to enjoy.
As a Third born he saw the bigger picture.

Fourth Born
This is the baby in the birth order sequence.  If life and work
are not fun, this birth order won’t play.  Michael Jordan the
basketball player and Olga Korbut the gymnast are both Fourth
borns and work was play.  Dolly Parton also has fun with her
work and does not take life too seriously. There is however a
negative side with trying to not grow up.  This was seen with
the socially unacceptable behavior of Mary Kay Letourneau
the school teacher that had an affair with her thirteen year old
student. She went to jail but violated her parole to see him
again.  She eventually married him when she finished her
prison sentence. He was also a Fourth born birth order. Seeing
yourself as a child and not taking responsibility for your
actions can be a negative side of this birth order. They can get
into co-dependent relationships because as a child, many
tasks were taken care of by older siblings.

Summary
All birth orders show their characteristics in both positive and
negative ways. Don’t be confused by behaviors that just don’t
seem to fit.  The siblings in one’s family color the expression
of one’s birth order.  You may need to ask a few questions
before you understand what is going on. I have addressed
only the Single Birth orders and not the Double Birth orders.
Double Birth orders have much stronger personality
characteristics. This translates into even greater differences
in their behavior as they amplify, intensify and magnify all
the normal birth order characteristics.
