Doc Holliday: His Birth Order Will Unmask Him

John Henry Holliday born August 14, 1851 known as the frontier Dentist who was a close friend of Wyatt Earp. He was with him at the Gunfight at the Ok Corral in Tombstone, Arizona. Doc Holliday was also a gambler and gunfighter. His life has been the topic of many books, movies and television series. He died in 1887 at the age of 36, many years before the invention of tape recorders or movie film. Stories have been written about his life, can we really see the man through these stories? A look at him using his Birth Order to unmask his personality will be revealing.

Doc’s Father

Major Henry Burroughs Holliday was a military man that participated in the Cherokee Indian War, Mexican War, and the Civil War. After the Mexican War, he brought home an orphaned boy, Francisco Hidalgo. Francisco was 13 years old at the time and was 16 years old when Doc was born.

Children in the Family

The first child to be born in the Holliday family was Martha, in 1850; she died at 6 months of age.  Doc was born one year later in 1851.  At the time he was born, his stepbrother Francisco was 16 years old. This large age gap would make Doc an Only/Two Double Birth Order.  (The early death of his sister would not be significant.) Doc would be the only natural child in the family, after the death of his sister. Having lost her first child, Doc’s Mom would be very protective of Doc, and he would be very close to his mother. His father would also be very influential in his life.  Being a military man Doc was exposed to firearms early in his life.

Doc’s Early Years

Doc would have seen Francisco as an older brother but would also know he was his father’s first biological son. Competition for his father’s attention would not have been an issue.  At age 15 his mother died of tuberculosis. Francisco would die of the same disease when Doc was 26.  Doc was exposed to TB while caring for his mother; he would not show symptoms until he was in his 20’s. He earned a dental degree from the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery when he was 20 years old. He would show signs of tuberculosis a few years later, it was then he decided to move West for his health. He had to know tuberculosis was a death sentence, having seen both his mother and stepbrother die of the disease.

The Only/Two Double Birth Order

The 16-year age difference between his older stepbrother and Doc gave him the characteristics and parenting of an Only child. He would be, “the adult in the room” wherever he was. In charge with an “attitude” would be his description. The Only child characteristics, amplify, intensify and magnify his Second born birth order characteristics. This is the birth order that says, “Don’t tell me what to do”. This combination of two birth orders would also give him a sense of what is right and wrong and the ability to enforce it. He would be a person you could count on as a friend but do not cross him.

Wyatt Earp’s Friend

A story was told that while Wyatt was serving as assistant city marshal in Dodge City, he followed several cowboys into a bar after they had shot up the town while galloping down Front Street. They entered the Long Branch Saloon, and vandalized the bar and began harassing the customers. When Wyatt entered the saloon and before he knew it, the cowboys were pointing their guns at him. Holliday was playing cards in the back of the room and seeing the situation he drew his weapon and put it to the head of the leader, forcing his men to disarm, rescuing Earp from the situation. The friendship would extend to the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral where Doc killed several men.

Doc’s Personality

The strength of his personality (there could be no doubt), was influenced by his knowledge about his death sentence from tuberculosis. Putting this together, we have a powder keg ready to go off.  He knew he was dying, he had seen both his mother and stepbrother die of the disease; he must have felt he had little to lose. Practicing Dentistry was difficult when patients knew he had TB, he turned to gambling to make a living which was legal in many states.  The stories about him are legend but some of his quotes ended up in the newspapers. He once said to a confronted gambler, “All I want of you is ten paces out in the street.”   Wyatt Earp said, “I found him a loyal friend and good company. He was a dentist whom necessity had made a gambler; a gentleman whose disease had made a vagabond; a philosopher whom life had made a caustic wit; a long, lean blonde fellow nearly dead with consumption and at the same time the most skillful gambler and nerviest, speediest, deadliest man with a six-gun I ever knew.” Bat Masterson said Holiday had a mean disposition and an ungovernable temper, and under the influence of liquor was a most dangerous man…” The Arizona Daily Star reported in 1882 by Virgil Earp. There was something very peculiar about Doc.  He was gentlemanly, a good dentist, a friendly man, and yet outside of us boys I do not think he had a friend in the Territory”.  They were two sides to his personality as there should be with a Double Birth Order. Some people saw both.

His Last Days

In 1887, Holliday made his way to the Hotel Glenwood near the Hot Springs.  He thought the curative power of the water would help but they did not.  Lying in his bed dying he looked at his bootless feet. The nurse said his last words were, “This is funny.”  He always figured he would be killed someday, with his boots on.

Richard Nixon: How His Birth Order Affected His Life

                                                           Richard Milhous Nixon

The 37th President of the United States and 36th Vice president under President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard Milhous Nixon’s second term as President ended with him resigning and leaving office.  The result of the cover-up of the Watergate break-in investigation. Could he have been prevented this? A look at his birth order will show us how he instinctively reacted to outside pressures in his life, and will give a better understanding of the man himself.

Early Years

Born to a poor Quaker family in Southern California, he was the second of five boys. There was a four year gap between the oldest boy and the next three births.  This gap gave Richard a Double Birth Order. He was the Second born but the Oldest in the second family, giving him a Two/One double birth order.

1909   Harold Died 1933 Age 24                                                                                                                   One/Only Birth Order                                                      4-year gap

12-year gap                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  1930 Edward                Only/Five Birth Order

In 1927 Harold, the oldest brother, was diagnosed with Tuberculosis. Richard was a freshman in High school. His mother moved to Arizona with his brother for his health. Richard now had to act like the Firstborn, knowing that when his brother returned he had to move back to his Second born position. This increased the pressure on him; he had to spend more time helping in the family store. In spite of waking at 4am to drive the family truck to Los Angeles for vegetables, he made the football team, debating team and graduated third in his class of 207.  He was offered a tuition grant to Harvard but could not attend due to his brother’s illness and the family financial situation; instead, he went to Whittier College where he played basketball, football, and was on the debating team. While in college, he founded a new school literary society. Graduating summa cum Laude in 1934, he went on to Duke School of Law on a scholarship and graduated third in his class.

A Permanent Change in Birth Order

When Richard was 20 years old, his brother returned home to celebrate his mother’s birthday. Harold died that day in his mother’s arms and Richard had to give her his brother’s present. This had to be a traumatic experience and a memory he carried with him for the rest of his life. At birth, until the death of his brother, Richard had the traits of both a Firstborn born and Second born.  A high achiever trait of the firstborn and someone that did not want to be told what to do, a second born trait.  He would be very protective of his personal space and this showed all through his life. After the death of his brother, Richard moved up to the Firstborn position. He was now in a position of leadership but still carried the Second born trait, wanting to protect his own space.

Marriage

Nixon met Thelma “Pat” Ryan when they were cast in a production of, The Dark Tower, at Whittier Community College. Nixon describes his meeting as, “a case of love at first sight,” it was not for Pat. She turned him down several times before agreeing to a first date. He was right, it was meant to be. They both had similar birth orders.  Nixon, now the Firstborn, and she a Fifth born, which starts the birth order numbers all over again.  A fifth born is a second level firstborn. The marriage lasted a lifetime. She died first and he four months later.

Nixon’s Personality

Everyone mentions that Nixon had a complex personality.  No doubt they were seeing a mix of traits of a Firstborn and Second born. I believe he was trying to act as a Firstborn but his innate Second born traits would color the picture. Some saw him as very secretive but awkward, inclined to distance himself from people but was formal in all aspects. Conrad Black described him as being “driven” though “uneasy with himself in some ways.” Biographer Elizabeth Drew said Nixon was a “smart talented man, but most peculiar and haunted of presidents”. Richard Reeves described Nixon as “a strange man of uncomfortable shyness, who functioned best alone with his thoughts”. Nixon believed putting distance between himself and others was necessary. “Even with close friends, I don’t believe in letting your hair down, confiding this and that…  I believe you should keep your troubles to yourself.  That is just the way I am. ….Some people think its good therapy to sit with a close friend and spill your guts….reveal their inner psyche….Not me. No way.”

Two Political Crises

Nixon had two significant political crises in his life.  The first when he was campaigning with General Dwight D. Eisenhower, as his Vice Presidential running mate. The media reported he had a political fund and that his backers paid his political expenses. This was not illegal; there were allegations of potential conflict of interest. Nixon went on television in 1952 and told millions of Americans that the fund was not secret and he was a man of modest means. He delivered it with much emotion, he dropped his protective shield to expose himself and it worked. Eisenhower kept him on the ticket. As a result, he would not give back a gift of a cocker spaniel that his daughter had named Checkers. This became the “Checkers” speech. His second crisis was the cover-up of the Watergate break in of the Democratic headquarters.  He continued to deny any involvement until his secret tapes were found. The side of his personality that refused to allow others into his personal space was his downfall. The cover up, not the crime, was the problem.  He lost his party’s support and to avoid impeachment he resigned the presidency. Had he been more open and transparent, the outcome may have been different, but his instinctive reaction caused by his birth order traits doomed him from winning this battle.

His Accomplishments

In spite of his leaving office early in his second term, he achieved many legislative successes. He ended our involvement in Vietnam in 1973, ended the military draft, and lowered the voting age to 18. He enforced desegregation of Southern schools, and established the Environmental Protection Agency. His administration began the war on drugs and cancer, and presided over the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and established Amtrak. The formation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration occurred during his administration.  After he left office and in retirement, he opened diplomacy with both Russia and China. He always said history would look favorably on his legacy and it has.

JACKIE GLEASON A LOOK AT HIS BIRTH ORDER

Given the title of “The Great One” by Orson Welles, Jackie Gleason did not disappoint. You could tell just by looking at him that he was a man that loved good food, and the good life.  The stories of his wild partying, drinking, and the company of beautiful women was common knowledge.  We remember him as Ralph Kramden in The Honeymooners, but there were more shows. Cavalcade of Stars, The Jackie Gleason Show, American Scene Magazine, and multiple movies. His role as Minnesota Fats in The Hustler, like his role in The Honeymooners, was not far from his real life’s experience.

Early Life

Herbert Walton Gleason Jr. was born February 26, 1916. His older brother Clement was eleven years older. This eleven-year gap gave both of the boys Double Birth orders, they would each have been treated like Only children. Clement was an Only/One and Jackie an Only/Two.  His mother named him Jackie and when his brother died, he was only three years old. His brother’s death made Jackie an Only child. An Only child’s biggest influence is his parents.  His father left the family when he was nine and he and his mother had to survive with little money. Her Three/Only Double birth order had to imprint some of her traits on Jackie. His mother, Mae Kelly, had a very strong personality; she “henpecked” her husband, possibly leading to him deserting the family.

Jackie’s Birth Order

Jackie, as an Only child born second, and having a mother that had a Three/Only birth order made him a complicated person.  The Only influence gave him great self-confidence and the ability to over-come his difficult early life.  The Two birth order allowed him to control his own space, “Don’t tell me what to do,” and would not let obstacles stand in his way. The Three trait gave him his interest in music and the preforming arts. Not only would he entertain on stage but would record a number of albums featuring “mood music.” He would enjoy acting and being the life of the party. All this was Jackie!

Marriages and Family

Jackie married three times, first to Genevieve Halford with whom he had two daughters. Divorced in 1970 he married Beverly Gleason, divorced in 1975 his last marriage was to Marilyn Gleason until his death in 1987. It is interesting to note that Marilyn was eight years younger than her older sister, giving her the Only/Two birth order, the same as Jackie. Can we say, “Love at first sight?” Jackie said of his love for Marilyn, “It had a perfect happy ending and everybody fell in Love.”

His Personality

His father left the family when Jackie was nine; he was then kept at home by an overprotective mother. He did not start school until he was eight years old. By the time he was twelve he was hustling pool. He quit school before graduating and became a master of ceremonies at a theater. He also worked as a stunt driver, carnival barker and bartender. Gleason was not an affable drunk but mean-spirited and nasty. A brilliant performer, he was not easy to work with. He had high salary demands and asked for outrageous perquisites. He hated rehearsing and when drinking had abrupt mood swings- charming one minute screaming the next. He was renowned for his total mastery and control over each production detail and insisted on the credit for the show.

Jackie’s Quotes

“I have no use for humility, I am a fellow with an exceptional talent. “The worst thing you can do with money is save it.” “I’m no alcoholic.  I am a drunkard. There is a difference. A drunkard doesn’t like to go to meetings.” “How sweet it is.” “One of these days, one of these days, POW right in the kisser.” He might have wanted to send Alice in the Honeymooners …”.to the moon Alice,” but on the riser of the second step from the top at his gravesite is his classic phrase “AND AWAY WE GO”
